Domestic workers in California will continue to be guaranteed overtime pay under legislation Gov. Jerry Brown signed Monday.

Nannies, home healthcare aides and other such workers won the right to extra compensation after nine hours in a day or 45 hours in a week back in 2013, when Brown signed a measure supporters dubbed the “The Domestic Worker Bills of Rights.” But the measure contained a January 2017 sunset, meaning that overtime mandate was set to expire soon.

Now it will endure unless future lawmakers act to repeal or alter it. Brown signed legislation to remove the sunset, Senate Bill 1015, without comment.

Brown announced the move on the same day he revealed he had signed a historic measure expanding overtime pay for farmworkers, enshrining more expansive labor protections in two industries where advocates warn heavily immigrant workforces are often exploited.
