Bay Area Foundations Issue Grant to Support No Hate SF

San Francisco, August 25, 2017—The San Francisco Bay Area is known the world over as a region that chooses diversity, justice and love over division and hate. But a planned demonstration of white supremacist and other extremists scheduled for this weekend threatens to upset the peace of our community. In response, long-time activist Cleve Jones has partnered with Horizons Foundation to create a new fund, No Hate SF (NoHateSF.org), to counter the type of extremist rhetoric that will be on display. Today, four leading Bay Area foundations, The San Francisco Foundation, the Walter and Elise Haas Fund, the Hellman Foundation, and the Rosenberg Foundation have jointly announced a donation of $40,000 to encourage the residents of the Bay Area to take a stand against hate.

“These uninvited and unwelcomed guests are coming to the city of Saint Francis as part of a larger strategy to divide our country. But we will not be divided. There is no place for this kind of hatred in our city,” stated Jones. “Let’s transform their evil energy into money that will be used to defend the communities they seek to attack.”

Tax-deductible contributions will be divided equally among the following Bay Area organizations whose missions speak to diversity and equality: Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center, Disability Rights and Education Defense Fund, Friendship House/Association of American Indians of San Francisco, La Raza Community Resource Center, Muslim Advocates, National Center for Lesbian Rights, Planned Parenthood, San Francisco NAACP, San Francisco Jewish Community Center, San Francisco LGBT Center, Southern Poverty Law Center, the National Immigration Law Center,  and the Transgender Law Center.

“Philanthropy can play an important role in advancing social justice,” stated Roger Doughty, President of Horizons Foundation. “There is no place in our community for the type of hatred these groups represent, and I’m proud that some of San Francisco’s most dynamic philanthropic organizations are taking the lead in countering hate with love and service. Horizons is proud to be part of this effort.”

A significant number of counter-protests are also scheduled throughout the weekend including:

SF Unite Against Hate – Friday at Noon at City Hall

Peace, Love and Understanding – Saturday, Noon, Civic Center Plaza

San Francisco Against Hate – March to Crissy Field – Saturday, 9am at Longshoreman’s Hall
